Treating people equal is unfair!
In the Netherlands and contrary to countries around us, such as Germany and France, we love treating people equal. One size fits all! Isn't it great...
No, it is not! Unfortunately, or should I say fortunately, all people are different. Maybe in some cases the differences are limited, but in any case, each individual is unique. In gender, culture, origin, but also in education, upbringing, experience, expression, and interests.
If people are so different, why treat them the same? I think it is, because it simplifies the corporate world, putting people in "boxes" and demanding the same performance and qualities from everyone in the same "box".
Regardless the system in which you operate as a manager, to me there is only one approach and that is to dare to differentiate within the team. Each individual in your team has his/her own typical needs in coaching and guiding, as well as getting directives.
It does not mean "boxes" do not exist. They provide the team and you with a structure and guidance to have clear mutual understanding of expectation, growthpath, pay, etc.
Use your leadership to let the team understand where you are heading towards, and what you (or your clients) expect.
If your team consists of professionals, they know their business and do not want to get told how to do things. Instead, manage on outcomes.
And, if the outcome is not what you or your client expects, then it is the right moment to show your leadership again...
So, I would suggest you start today to tune your leadership
to each individual in your team. Differentiation is a must!
